Greenville College vs. Minnesota Morris Recap

GREENVILLE COLLEGE WINS AGAIN!

The Greenville College Panthers played their home opener today against the Minnesota Morris Cougars and won with a final score of 56-27! The Panther Offense was once again clicking and the Panther defense was making momentum-swinging plays.  Yet, the Panthers, at times, were seemingly fighting against themselves racking up 7 penalties for 116 yards.  GC had to look to their motto of  “find a way or make one,” to get the job done!

An impressive 550 yards of offense and 251 yards on special teams combined to total 801 yards gained against the Minnesota Morris Cougars. Not only did the offense and special teams shine, but when the Panther Defense took the field, they picked up where they left off last week and continued to attack the ball.  Morris was forced to punt the ball 4 times, along with giving up three interceptions. Inside the box, the Panther Defense was also getting work done, playing ferociously only allowing 95 yards on the ground.  Within the first two games, the Panthers have shown that on all cylinders, they are a force to be reckoned with in the UMAC.

After a fast start that began with a Chambers to Butler 18 yard touchdown connection on the opening series of the game, the Panthers sputtered and soon found themselves down 12-7.  Fearlessly, Greenville responded by reeling off 3 unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter.  Following quite a showing against Millikin catching the ball, senior Running Back Shawn McKnight did his part to pick up the team as he scampered down the away team sideline for a 46-yard touchdown to put the Panthers back ahead 14-12.  Sophomore Running Back Jacob Stull followed suit as he found pay dirt with an 11 yard run.  Quarterback Brendan Chambers repeatedly stepped up to the plate in tough situations, scrambling to his right to find Wide Receiver Nick Newton deep in the back of the end zone for an amazing 45-yard completion.  Up 28-12 with 1:00 minute left in the first half, Greenville was rolling until Minnesota Morris shocked the crowd and ran the ensuing kickoff return back for a 95-yard score.  Morris successfully gained more momentum by converting their 2-point attempt.
Yet, the Panthers “accepted the challenge” and responded to the kickoff return from Minnesota Morris by intercepting the Cougar’s first two drives in the second half. The Panther Offense did their part in answering the call with two touchdowns, both of which, not surprisingly were on the ground.  The first of these came when Chambers kept it in his hands and ran in from 23 yards out, while the second score was a product of McKnight from 6-yards out.
In the fourth quarter, the Greenville College Panthers, “closed the gap” by only allowing Minnesota Morris 7 points, the only points Morris had in the second half.  The defense matched Morris’ scoring in the second half as freshman Defensive Back Richard Wilburn ran back an interception 60-yards for another Panther touchdown!

Next week, the Panthers travel to play the Red Devils of Eureka College!  If you can’t make it out to the game, be sure to support EMAP Nation by tuning in for the live game cast to catch all the action by your Greenville College Panthers!
