Greenville Panthers vs. Northwestern (MN)  Eagles Recap

The Greenville Panthers lost a tough one today by a score of 35-28. Greenville got off to a great start by scoring in less than 45 seconds. Jacob Battaglia scored his first touchdown as a starting running back by taking a pitch 70 yards for the score.  A quick three and out was forced by the Panther defense and the offense of the Panthers went on a long 15 play drive only to be stopped on a 4th and 1. The defense make another great stop for Greenville and the ensuing punt was blocked by Rafael Morales and recovered in the end zone by Nick Morrow to put the Panthers up 14-0. The Northwestern offense then went on a 10 play, 64 yard scoring drive to make the score 14-7.  The Greenville offense was stopped on a 4th down after another drive into Northwestern territory. Greenville’s defense responded with a fourth down stop of their own to give the Panthers the ball deep in their own territory. This did not phase the Panther offense as they turned the fields quickly with a 3 play 78 yard scoring drive capped of by a 67-yard touchdown catch by John Dudley from quarterback Eric Northey.  The score put the Panthers up 21-7 with 9 minutes left in the half. The Eagles responded with a touchdown drive of their own to make the score 21-14.  Greenville’s offense then went on a 14 play scoring drive covering 76 yards in 5 and a-half minutes. The drive was finished off with an impressive catch by running back Jordan Mixon from new quarterback Jacob Battaglia, who was replacing an injured Eric Northey. This score put the deficit to 28-14 in favor of the Panthers and the Eagles took a knee to end the first half.
Greenville kicked off to start the second half and would not see the ball until 8:57 left in the quarter as the Eagles went on a 13 play, 60 yard drive ending in a score by the Northwestern offense to make the score 28-21. The Panther offense could not produce anything in 3 plays and was forced to punt. Greenville’s defense rose to the occasion once again with a fourth down stop by Jake Mennemeier and Cory Snyder. The Panther offense fumbled the ball away in their next possession to give the Northwestern offense great field position. This short field resulted in a score by the Eagles and tied the score at 28-28.  The Panther offense could not convert a 4th and 7 in Northwestern territory and gave the ball back to the Eagle offense with 14:18 left to go in the game. The Eagles were forced to punt and after another drive by Greenville’s offense in Eagle territory resulted in a failed fourth down conversion. 2 quick unsuccessful drives by both teams left Northwestern with the ball at there own 47 with 1:28 left. This time proved enough for the Eagle offense as they scored in just over a minute to go up 35-28. This left the Panther offense with only 26 seconds left to drive 75 yards. The hope of the Panthers was quickly thwarted by an interception thrown by Greenville’s quarterback. The Eagle offense just took a couple knees to end the game and give the Northwestern Eagles the victory.


The Panthers had two runners hit the century mark today led by Nathan Callaway with 28 carries for 133 yards. Battaglia also had 117 yards on 14 carries. Eric Northey led the offense in passing yards with 90 on 3 of 5 passing and John Dudley led the receiving corps with 3 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. The Greenville defense was led in tackles by Snyder, with 14, and Mennemeier , with 10.  Joey Silva had a sack and two tackles for loss as well. The Panthers move to 5-2 on the year and 5-1 in the conference. They will host Iowa Wesleyan for Homecoming this Saturday October 25th.  This Friday the 24th will also be the annual Alumni game at 3:00 in the afternoon.
